Switchgrass is one of my favorites. It grows in a tall, upright clump that lends itself to both specimen plantings and hedges. It blooms in late summer with a haze of tiny, pink-tinted flowers that turn into golden-brown seedheads. The fall leaf color is yellow to tan.
Panicum virgatum is a must-have for wildlife lovers. It's a host plant for skipper butterflies, and birds enjoy the seeds. When planted in mass, it provides good wildlife cover and helps prevent erosion. Also known as Panic Grass. Hardy in zones 3-9. Full sun to part shade.
