Penstemon secundiflorus has lavender-pink to purple flowers that bloom on one side of the stem, giving it the common name of Sidebells Penstemon. Also known as Orchid Beardtongue for its flower color. Native to CO, NM and WY.
Penstemon secundiflorus grows best in sandy loam with full sun. It seems to be rather particular about growing conditions. I lost all of my plants in the first year - presumably because it was too hot and dry for them. So I'm trying again in a cooler spot in the yard. Hardy in zones 4-9.

Sow penstemon seeds outdoors in pots in late fall or winter. Or start indoors, then refrigerate the pots for 6 weeks. Barely cover the seeds with soil. Full sun.
