Squash 'Red Warty Thing'

Red Warty Thing winter squash has bright red-orange skin that is covered with bumpy warts. The round to oblong fruits weigh 10-20 pounds, and they are perfect for fall decorations.

Because of the warts, Red Warty Thing is not good for long-term storage, but it has a delicious flavor. The flesh is sweet with a fine texture. We like to bake it, then freeze it in containers for later use.

Red Warty Thing was introduced in 1897 under the name Victor. It is a cross between a pumpkin and a red Hubbard squash. It disappeared from circulation for a long time and then was revived from seed stored at a seed bank.

Sowing Red Warty Thing Squash Seeds

Sow squash seeds outdoors after the last frost date, 1" deep. Sow in hills spaced 4-6' apart. Thin to 2 plants per hill. Full sun.
