Squash 'Waltham Butternut'

110 days, Cucurbita moschata

$3.00

30 seeds

Waltham butternut squash produces 12"-long, thick-necked fruits that weigh up to 5 pounds. The yellow-orange flesh has a delicious nutty flavor.

Waltham butternut has hard vines that are resistant to squash vine borer. It is an excellent long-keeper in storage. This American heirloom appeared in the 1940s and was an All-America Selections winner in 1970.

Cooking tip: Waltham butternut squash is easy to prepare because you don't need an axe to cut it. Just cut off the stem end, slice it in half lengthwise, and bake it cut-side down in a glass baking dish with a little water to keep it from drying out.
