Bean 'Mayflower'

'Mayflower' bean has unique, squarish seeds that are gray speckled with rose. They are perfect for soups and baked beans. The green pods bulk up quickly, but they can be eaten when only 2-3 inches long, if you can catch them early enough. They are prized for their delicious, nutty flavor, which reminds me of hazelnuts. The 8-foot vines require trellising.

The exact history of this heirloom is unknown. Some sources say it was brought to America by early settlers, while others say it was probably obtained from a native tribe. Either way, it quickly became popular in the American colonies. This variety is also known as 'Amish Knuttle' bean.
